一、基本情况
西藏民族大学南亚研究所（中心），成立于2015年4月。其背景是中国政府着力推进共建“一带一路”倡议，并将西藏自治区纳入到国内具体承担重要建设任务的省份。学校为了增强服务西藏经济社会发展能力，不断提升学校科研实力、培育及健全科研梯队等需要，成立了该研究机构，并确定为科研实体。
根据教育部2017年6月下发的教外司综【2017】1377号文件，南亚所入选教育部国别和区域研究中心备案名单，根据2019年6月国家民委下发文件民办发【2019】74号，南亚研究所被认定为国家民委“国别和区域研究中心”管理下的“南亚研究所（中心）”，聚焦不丹、尼泊尔、印度及南亚区域。
2016年6月，经学校学位委员会研究决定，由本研究所与学校财经学院合作设立的“中国与南亚经济贸易关系研究”硕士研究方向获准招生。2016、2017、2018、2019和2020年，本研究所（中心）5年累计招生15名硕士研究生。截止2020年6月，已经有两届共7名研究生获得学位并顺利毕业。到2020年6月，研究所（中心）有专职研究人员4名，校内外兼职研究人员30余名。
根据西藏民族学院2015年4月30日下发的院党发[2015] 9号文件，聘任南亚研究所负责人如下：所长—牛治富（原西藏自治区党委党校副校长、教授）、常务副所长—狄方耀（科研处处长兼，教授、博导）。
根据西藏民族大学2019年1月8日下发的藏民大发[2019] 2号文件，聘任南亚研究所负责人如下：所长—狄方耀（教授、博导）、副所长—李炜（博士、副教授）、专职顾问—牛治富（教授）。
根据西藏民族大学2020年11月25日下发的藏民大发[2020] 56号文件，聘任南亚研究所负责人如下：顾问—狄方耀（教授）、所长—赵家红（教授）、常务副所长—尹辉（副教授）、所长助理—傅小钊（讲师）。

六、研究所（中心）的基本研究领域
本研究所（中心）将充分利用中国西藏比邻南亚地区的区位与地缘优势，以本校和本研究所（中心）的学科优势、人才优势和学术积淀为基础，以国家的周边外交理念及“一带一路”倡议的原则为指导，主要致力于以下领域的研究：中国与南亚国家政治及外交关系研究、中国与南亚国家经济贸易合作交流研究、中国与南亚国家历史和文化交往研究、中国西藏与南亚国家相邻国家经济贸易交流研究、中国西藏与南亚国家旅游和文化合作研究、中国西藏文化对外传播等。
About ISAS, XZMU
The Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) at Xizang Minzu university（XZMU） was founded in April, 2015. It is an academic organization that conducts research programs in the areas of economics, political and diplomatic relations, culture, history and communication between Xizang Autonomous Region and South Asian Countries. Adhering to the “Belt and Road Initiative” proposed by President Xi Jinping, the Institute is committed to fully utilizing the geo-political advantages of Xizang to serve the national strategy toward South Asia as well as the development of border trade, tourism, and cultural relations between Xizang Autonomous Region and South Asian Countries.
ISAS is home to nearly 40 professors and PhDs from XZMU, led by director Zhao Jiahong, also dean of School of Foreign Languages, vice-director Yin Hui, and consultant Di Fangyao (former director of ISAS). Meanwhile, it also employs over 10 famous experts and scholars in South Asian Studies around China to perform part-time research.
Focusing on conducting fundamental and goal-oriented practical research, ISAS persists in the mission of building an open, efficient and leading institute and serving for the development of Xizang Autonomous Region. Its task is to put together the strength of the scholars from XZMU and outside to undertake research into the major and key issues on South Asian Studies.
The vision of ISAS includes:
(1) Actively participating in the “Belt and Road Initiative” and make efforts to become a think tank of the government to serve the national strategy toward South Asia;
(2) Undertaking research programs entrusted by local government, enterprises and public institutions, providing consulting services to their decision-making and contributing to the social and economic development of Xizang Autonomous Region;
(3) Serving as a platform for scientific research and teaching. In order to generate high-quality teaching and research, ISAS will organize seminars, workshops, and training, providing opportunities of growth and development for both scholars and students.
(4) Dedicating to both fundamental and goal-targeted research and prioritizing important and urgent research issues in the social and economic development of Xizang Autonomous region.
By constantly tracing the latest research trends and contributing research achievements, ISAS endeavors to forge itself into a leading research institute in Xizang Autonomous Region and a high-level think tank in China.
